There are four different types of leadership: autocratic, democratic, laissez faire and servant. Autocratic leaders rely on their power and authority to get people to follow them. Democratic leaders try to involve others in decision making through open communication and discussion. Laissez faire leaders believe in the idea that it’s up to the individual follower how they want to go about their work or tasks at hand.
The last type of leadership is called servant which focuses on the needs of the subordinates, while still being able to effectively get results. It is a type of leadership that balances both servant and leader qualities.
This type of leadership has been around since the 1800s and was pioneered by Robert K. Greenleaf, who first wrote about it in his essay “The Servant as Leader.” He noted that “The servant-leader is servant first… It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first.”
Servant leadership is a form of transformational leadership, where the leader does not focus on themselves but instead focuses on improving those around them. A servant leader is one who helps people develop their potential, and encourages growth and organisational change. This can be done by showing positive regard for followers, clear communication and easy accessibility.
Servant leaders think about how their own behavior will affect the person they are leading, and what it would take for them to feel fulfilled in their work. They do this by living out the values they want their followers to live out and setting goals that will help them achieve those values.
